Hello,

I am trying to figure out whether a 14 day JR pass will be worth it. My son (9yrs) and I will be arriving in Tokyo narita on the 4th of July and we are flying out of Tokyo Haneda on the 19th. After a few days in Tokyo i am thinking to head to Hiroshima and miyajima. And to visit Kyoto, Nara, Kobe and Osaka (probably doing day trips from Kyoto,Osaka) on the way there and back. Will probably also do a day trip to Hakene. Does this seem? If not, any other ideas? And if so, would the JR 14 pass be worth it? Would we have to buy other train tickets as well? I know there are overnight busses but since I am travelling with my son, I don't really fancy using those.

Thanks!

Hi there,

A 14 day JR Pass is well worth considering if you plan to travel from Tokyo to Hiroshima and back. It's quite a trip and you can make good savings compared to purchasing normal tickets with all the side trips added in to Kyoto, Osaka, Nara and Kobe.

Kyoto and Osaka are directly on the route between Tokyo - Hiroshima. What you could do this visit them in this order: Tokyo - Kyoto - Hiroshima - Osaka - Tokyo. This way you nicely spread your travel around and don't have to do the full trip Tokyo - Hiroshima in one go.

If you have time for a side trip, also consider stopping at Himeji to view the castle and castle gardens. The castle has been newly renovated and it looks stunning.

The JR Pass covers travel to all the places mentioned here but you still may have to use local transport outside of JR, think of the subway or buses run by other companies. I would avoid night buses at any cost. There's a good change you may not catch any sleep and lose the next day to fatigue. Also I think your son may enjoy the high speed bullet trains a lot more.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thank you. We will be getting the JR passes! I will check out Himeji, too. Thank you for the suggestion.
