Hi there!

Am planning a 10 day travel in Japan and am not sure if it is cost effective to purchase a 14 day travel pass or 7 day pass and the days I am in Tokyo just purchase tickets as required. What are everyones thoughts?

Thanks!

Hi there,

That completely depends on your itinerary. In general it is best to use to JR Pass for travel between different regions in Japan and buy local tickets for the rest.

I can give you a better idea if you tell me your itinerary.

Hi Daniel,

All I have booked accommodation wise is as follows:

Sun: Arrive - Tokyo
Mon: - Tokyo
Tues: - Tokyo
Wed: - Kyoto
Thurs: - Kyoto
Fri: _ Tokyo
Sat: Tokyo
Sun: Hakone
Mon: Tokyo
Tues: Tokyo

I wanted to take a day trips to Hiroshima and also Nikko on two of the Tokyo days. That is all I have figured out at the moment. I would probably do one of these trips on the Tues and the other maybe on the Fri or Sat then that way if I bought a 7 day ticket, I would only be purchasing inter-Tokyo tickets earlier and later in the trip as I don't think I will be venturing too far from Tokyo.

Thanks SO much for your input!
Jess

Hi Jess,

I think the best to use a 7 day JR Pass for this itinerary. This would make most sense in terms of budget. If you can, try to travel from Kyoto to Hiroshima. This will save you almost 3 hours of travel time!

Nikko works great as a day trip from Tokyo, so you could just go there when you feel like it. I would make the trip when your JR Pass is active. This way you can ride the bullet train in style.

Hope this helps!

Hi Daniel,

Thanks!! I will look into going to Kyoto from Hiroshima. I was also wondering if you could please enlighten me as to what a Suica card is? Do you think this would be a viable option to the days I won't use the JR Pass? From what I gather it is a reload able card that you are able to use on all JR Trains, metro, bus and ferry - please correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks so much!
Jess

Hi Jess,

The Suica card is a prepaid travel card and is great for local travel. So it makes for a great addition to the JR Pass. It is also very hand as you just swipe it over the ticket gate when you enter and exit a station. This way the right fare will be deducted automatically and you don't have to find the right ticket prices every time yourself. It is valid on pretty much anything that moves and can also be used for purchases at many shops. All in all, it's very handy.

Hope this helps too!
Daniel
