Which pass would be worth getting?

Hello there,

I will be traveling in Japan from August 10-16, 2014. I am wondering which pass, or combination of passes, would be worth getting for my stay.

Here is my plan as of now:

Day 1: Fly into Osaka, take train to Osaka or Kyoto and spend the night.

Day 2: Take train to Hiroshima and tour there, head back to Kyoto for the night.

Day 3: Kyoto

Day 4: Kyoto for the day, head to Osaka for the night.

Day 5: Osaka (or Nara day trip)

Day 6: Osaka

Day 7: Fly back home to Busan.

1) I was looking at the JR West Sanyo Pass, since my plan includes Hiroshima, and I could use the ferry to Miyajima. The pass covers 4 days, and my major train trips are within my first 4 days. Is it worth it?

2) Would I need another pass to use within Kyoto and Osaka (subways and buses)? If so, what is the best option?

3) Do you recommend the Haruka pass for travel to and from the airport with my itinerary?

Thank you for your advice. I look forward to hearing from you!

Hi there,

1.) The Sanyo pass is a reasonable deal, it's about the same price as a normal return Osaka - Hiroshima but it certainly can help you make savings if you use it for other transport as well.

2.) There are day passes available but it depends on what you wish to visit, if they are useful or not. Personally I love the 500yen bus pas which you can buy in Kyoto. It allows for unlimited travel for a single day on all buses within Tokyo. A single ride is 220 yen so it's easy to make savings.

3.) Yes the Haruka + ICOCA pass is a great deal, especially if you travel to Kyoto directly from the Airport. The ICOCA pass is also very handy to travel around with.

Enjoy Japan!
