Which pass to purchase

Hello, My husband I are going to be travelling through Japan for 20 days between December and January. We aren't sure whether it is worth getting the 21 day pass or if we should go for one of the shorter passes.

December 22 - 27 --- Tokyo
December 28 - January 3 --- Hakuba (+ day trip to Matsumoto)
January 3 -5 --- Takayama
January 5 - 7 ---Kanazawa
January 7 - 11 --- Kyoto (+ day trips to Nara and Kobe)

Since we aren't doing much travel in the first week or so, is it worth buying those tickets individually and then activating a 7 day pass for the final leg which has more travel?

Hi there,

Overall your travel cost is not that much. You do a one way from Tokyo to Kyoto via the northern part of Honshu with different stops along the way. For now I would recommend purchasing normal tickets but this could change if you do any more travel.

You can use our JR Fare Calculator to get an estimate of your travel cost and compare it against the cost of a Japan Rail Pass.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
