Hello. We are first time visitors and this is our itinerary:

Day 1 - Kansai airport-Osaka Namba hotel

Day 2 -Osaka

Day 3 -Osaka-Koyasan (day trip)

Day 4 -Osaka-Kyoto

Day 5 -Kyoto

Day 6 -Kyoto

Day 7 -Kyoto-Nara (day trip)

Day 8- Kyoto

Day 9 -Kyoto-Tokyo

Day 10 -Tokyo

Day 11 -Tokyo

Day 12 -Tokyo-Nikko (day trip)

Day 13 -Tokyo

Day 14 -Tokyo-Kamakura (?) or Kakone (?) or Mt Fuji (?) (day trip-haven't decided yet which one of them)

Day 15-Tokyo

Day 16-Tokyo-Haneda airport

Is this a good itinerary? It's better to buy a 7 or 14 days jr pass or just buy separate the rail tickets? Can you compare the 2 options and see which option is better?

Thanks in advance,

Daniel

Hi there,

I looked trough your itinerary for the best option and recommend purchasing normal ticket as you travel. A JR Pass works well if you travel a couple of times between different regions in Japan. Your itinerary 1st is based on Kansai and then in Kanto, with one longer trip from Kyoto - Tokyo. Therefor the JR Pass would not help you make savings.

A JR Pass would be helpful were you to include a bit more Shinkansen travel, think of a side trip to Himeji, Hiroshima or possibly Takayama.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thank you for the quick reply. One more question though.Do you think a 2 or 3 days Kansai pass works for the first 3 days in Osaka area?Especially for Kansai airport-Namba,Osaka-Koyasan,Osaka-Kyoto and for the subway in Osaka?Or is better to purchase them separately?

Hi again!

I think going with local tickets works better. There are many different transport companies you will use in Osaka and to Koya. There's not really one pass that covers all of that.

You can look into buying an IC card like Icoca to make travel easier.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
