Which pass is best?

Aloha,

My husband and I will be flying from Hawaii to Tokyo and staying there for 6 full days. We are mostly going to tour around Tokyo and then making a couple day trips to areas outside of Tokyo, such as Hakone (Fuji). Do you have recommendations on other non city-like areas that we can visit in one day from Tokyo? We contemplated on visiting Osaka or Kyoto but that would a bit far and aggressive for a 6-day trip.

Knowing that this is the itinerary, would the JR pass be suitable and cost effective? The pass should work on the Yamanote Line around Tokyo. Which Shinkasen line can I ride on the JR pass? Will it take us to Hakone?

I understand that I will need to go to an exchange office to exchange the voucher to an actual pass. However, we arrive Tokyo at 10PM and by then, all the offices would've closed, is that true?

Thank you!

Hi there!

For travel around Tokyo and a visit to Hakone, I think that it would be better to buy tickets locally. You could consider a Hakone Free Pass. Which you can use for unlimited travel around the Hakone area and also covers a return Tokyo(Shinjuku) - Hakone on the Odakyu line.

I would recommend a JR Pass if you'd made the trip to Osaka but for now I using normal tickets is the most cost effective way.

Hope this helps!
Daniel
