My family of four(two teens) will be traveling in September to Japan. We will land in Narita
4 nights Shibuya w possible side trip
2 nights Tokyo Bay one of those days Disney Sea
4 nights Kyoto w side trip to Nara
2 nights Osaka
Fly out from Narita
I am unsure of a few things. When should I activate JR rail pass? Should I get a green or ordinary pass? Can I make reservations from Tokyo to Kyoto so that my family can sit together for the trip if I purchase an ordinary pass?
Last but not least... Can someone please advise me the most efficient way to travel on arrival from Narita to Shibuya as well as the best way to travel from Osaka to Narita to return home?

Hi there,
I recommend getting a 7 day JR Pass for travel to Kyoto, Osaka and back to Narita Airport. You can reserve seats the moment that you are in Japan and have exchanged the JR Pass. There are many seats to go around and you won't find to problem to have seating together if you reserve seats a day or so in advance.
For travel from Narita Airport to Shibuya, I'd recommend using the Narita Express. This is the fastest and most comfortable way. There are special luggage sections in the train too.
