18 Oct Morning flight from Kansai Int'l.

As been told , is it wont be easy to do tours with train in Hokkaido and Kyoto as attraction to visit need a long walk sometime ?
Thus why we plan to take a JR train from CTS airport to Odoripark area on our arrival day.
The next day start to rent a car for 4 days to do those places.
We plan to activate 7 day JR National pass to start our train trip from Sapporo to Shin Hakodate and cont with Shinkansen to Tokyo .
While in Tokyo still confused. should we rent a car to cover outskirt like Hakone + Mishiyama skywalk or shd we rent a car again ? Since we still have 6 days to use the JR pass.

Thank you for your kind attention.

Hi there,

Welcome to the forum. To start with your question, I think 14 day JR Pass would suit your itinerary best and use it from Oct 4th to Oct 17th. This will give you the best possible savings and you will make very good savings compared to purchasing normal tickets. The route Sapporo - Tokyo and Tokyo - Kyoto are especially costly without a Japan Rail Pass. You can also use the Hokkaido Shinkansen to Tokyo, which is the fastest way by rail.

Now let's have a more detailed look at your itinerary. I see that you've already done many of the famous places in Kyoto, I would recommend a visit to Kurama and Kibune. This area is much less frequented by tourists and is a wonderfull hike along temples and mountain paths. Should be good for at least half a day, you can also visit Kurama Onsen if you want to enjoy Japanese bath culture.

If you haven't been to the centre of Osaka then I would suggest visiting the Namba/Shinsaibashi/Dotonbori area in the south of Osaka. Here is where the real atmosphere of Osaka can be found with many famous small places to eat, things to try and counless small shops.

As for travel to attractions, this really depends on where you want to go. Some places are more remote while others are within a couple minutes from a station. You can visit most of the places in Hokkaido using the railway and sometimes with a bus from the station. Tokyo also has really good public transport and generally you won't need a car.

Kind regards,
Daniel
