Appreciate your advice on what type of JR pass you would recommend to purchase for my below plan itinerary (13 Nights) in Japan. Thanks

28/1/16 – Arrival Narita airport and need to travel to Nagano. (Already booked Nagano Hotel for 5 nights stay). What would be the best ways to reach Nagano?
29/1/16 – Explore Nagano
30/1/16 – Day trip to Karuizawa
31/1/16 – Day trip to Hakuba
1/2/16 – Day trip to Toyama
2/2/16 – Depart from Nagano to Shinjuku. Stay at Shinjuku hotel (8 nights)
3/2/16 – Explore Tokyo
4/2/16 – Day trip to Mt Fuji
5/2/16 – Day trip to Hakone
6/2/16 – Tokyo Disneyland
7/2/16 – Explore Tokyo
8/2/16 – Explore Tokyo
9/2/16 – Explore Tokyo
10/2/16 – Depart from Shinjuku to Narita airport. Should I take Narita Express or Limousine?

Hi there,

Narita Airport - Nagano ¥ 10,980
Nagano - Karuizawa (return) ¥ 7,360
Nagano - Hakuba (return) ¥ 7,940
Nagano - Toyama (return) ¥ 14,200
Nagano - Shinjuku ¥ 7,110

For a total of ¥ 47,590 or ¥18,480 in savings as the 7 day JR Pass is ¥ 29,110.

As for the return to Narita Airport, I'd go for the Narita Express. It is fast en reliable and does not get stuck in traffic.

Hope this helps,

Dear Daniel,

Thanks for your kind advice. May I clarify further whether it would be more cost savings if we were to purchase JR East Pass (¥22,000 for 5 days) or the new JR Tokyo Wide Pass (¥10,000 for 3 days) for our above planned itinerary?

Is it feasible to purchase 2 sets of JR Tokyo Wide Pass where 1st set to activate on arrival date 28/1/16 cover up to 30/1/16; 2nd set JR Tokyo Wide Pass to activate on 31/1/16 cover up to 2/2/16? The total cost would be ¥20,000 (savings ¥9,110) compare to 7 days nationwide JR Pass cost ¥29,110?

Is JR Tokyo Wide Pass able to cover all trains required to take during our first 6 days of itinerary from Narita/Nagano /Karuizawa/Hakuba/Toyama/Shinjuku ?

In general, among the 3 different types of Pass ie. 7 days JR Nationwide Pass, JR East Pass and JR Tokyo Wide Pass, what would be the best Pass recommend for use in view our itinerary? Really appreciate your advice and comments again. Thank you very much!

Hi again!

The thing is, the JR East Pass does not cover all the travel you plan to do (Toyama mostly). That is basically the reason why I went with a 7 day JR Pass and not a regional pass.
