What JRP would you advise us to buy?

Hi there!

We are going to Japan for first time for 15-16 days. Before buying the 14days JRP (it seems like the obvious choice) we would love to have some advice. Maybe it could be worth to buy the 7 days JRP and then a couple of regular train tickets?

The itinerary we have in mind is as follows:

Narita airport > Tokyo.

4 days in Tokyo (with daytrips to Kamakura and Nikko)

Tokyo > Takayama (night in Takayama)

Takayama > Kyoto

3 days in Kyoto (with daytrip to Nara)

Kyoto > Mount Koya (night in Mount Koya)

Mount Koya > Osaka (Night in Osaka)

Osaka > Tokyo (One night in Tokyo)

Tokyo > Narita Airport

We´ll love to stay a night in a Ryokan as well and we have been looking online for some of them, but everyone we like (with hot springs) seems to be too far away from our journey. Does somebody know about some good ryokan next to those destinations? Any other piece of advice will be welcome :)

Thanks in advance!

Hi there,

You could consider using a 7 day JR Pass if you can cover Tokyo - Takayama - Kyoto .... and back to Tokyo with it. This would be the best option economically. Then buy normal tickets or day passes while you are in Tokyo.

As for Ryokans, there are plenty of options but they can be pretty pricey. It's not hard to find a good Ryokan in either Kyoto or Takayama. For instance look at Kurama in the north of Kyoto. An other alternative would be to stay near Gero Onsen, this is an onsen resort about 40 minutes by train from Takayama with different Ryokan in the area. You could stay the night there and visit Takayama the following morning.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
