Western Japan sites to see?

Hello,

I am traveling to Japan May 8th to 27th as a seasoned traveller and have been to Japan many times; and while I got a good idea where I'd like to go, I also have some gaps to fill and would like to see if anyone has suggestions on places to visit. I can always change my itinerary if it is better time/travel-wise.

May 8th - Kansai area (Nara/Kyoto/Gifu) for 4 nights
May 12th - Miyajima one night will activate 14 day JR Pass
May 13 - Fujuoka for 4 nights
May 17-23 - ???? northern coast of Honshu?
May 24 - Kyoto 3 nights

I love quirky/odd/off the beaten path types of places to visit. I'm also a major foodie. If anyone can recommend me of places to visit, it'll be much appreciated. I am curious if 4 nights in Fujuoka is sufficient enough to see most of Kyushu? Is it worth visiting the northern coast of Honshu; if so, what cities/places would you recommend? Even though I return to Kyoto for the last 3 nights of my trip, I'm open to changing that if there are other cities I ought to stay.

Some sites I am interested in visiting so one can get an idea what I am interested in:
Instant ramen museum
Yoro Park
Daio Wasabi Farm
Ramen stadium
Beppu hot springs
Wisteria tunnel

Many thanks for your assistance in my itinerary!

Mei

Hi Mei,

Visiting Hiroshima and Kyushu is great. Personally I think it's the best part of Japan! Four days is a good start but a couple more days could be nice depending on what you wish to visit.

Here are some recommendations:

Nagasaki this city is great! There's a lot to do and see I think that you may be interested in Hashima. Other interesting places are Mount Inasa, Nagasaki Peace park and Dejima.

I would also recommend a visit to Kobe which has a lot to offer. There are hundreds of small attractions and I am sure that you'll find something you like. You could for instance visit some of the Sake Breweries and the local China town is very interesting too.

If you want to try good ramen I would recommend a visit to Kurume this is a secret I learned from an other traveler. Kurume is known to make some of the best ramen in Japan and can be found on the Shinkansen between Fukuoka and Kumamoto.

In Honshu consider a visit to Matsue a visit to the local Adachi Museum of art and Izumo Taisha are some of the best places in the area.

Hope this gives you some ideas!

Hi Daniel,

Thank you for the suggestions!

I've been to Hiroshima and Kobe before. I definitely plan on visiting both places again. I'll look up Matsue and hopefully that'll be a good starting place and I find other places to see and do.

Thanks,

Mei
