Value of JR Pass compared to individual tickets?

Hello,

I will take my family to Japan in June, staying for 12 days. We have decided for an itinerary and we will travel more or less every second day. Our itinerary will be:

Narita
Gora
Wakayama
Kushimoto
Kanda (Tokyo)
Tachikawa
Matsuo (Chiba)
Maihama
Narita

When I have compared ticket prices on Google and Jorudan train planner, I get the total price of 48.000-50.000 yen depending on the exact trains.

I converted the 14 days JR Pass from Euro to yen, and got the price of just over 46.000 yen. That would then exclude travel Odawara-Gora (return trip) as that route is run by non-JR trains.

If my assumptions and calculations are right, there will not be a significant benefit by using the JR Pass - or have I missed something?

Hi Aleister,

Sounds about right, you can also use our JR Facecalulator: www.jrpass.com/farecalculator.

The other advantage of the JR Pass is convenience and a set budget. You won't have to buy tickets each time you travel, instead you just show the JR Pass which is your one ticket to all of Japan.

Additionally, since you do get unlimited travel you can take any train you want. Say plans change or you want to get on a different train, than you won't have any extra costs.

I agree regarding the convenience.

Also, I realized after looking at other itineraries and some of your earlier replies that I should use it differently. Instead of a 14 day pass, it would be better with a 7 day pass and use it on the first half of the trip, for the longer journeys. For the last part, regular tickets or a Suica card should work well.
