Unsure if a JRP is suitable for our itinerary?

Hi,

I've been looking into a JRP but not sure if it is worth it for our itinerary, does anyone have any ideas/comments that can help me decide?

Our trip plan is:

  • 11th July 2016 - Arrive Tokyo Haneda Terminal 1, night at a hotel in Tokyo (Shinjuku)
  • 12th July to 13th July - organised trek of Mt Fuji (need to meet at Keio Plaza hotel, Shinjuku 6am first morning, returned to here after trek completes.) On the 13th we need to get from Shinjuku to the Hilton Hotel at Disney

  • 14th, 15th - Disney

  • 16th July - after day at Disney we leave Hilton hotel and return to a hotel in Tokyo
  • 17th July - early train to Osaka
  • 20th July - Train from Osaka to Kyoto
  • 21st July to 26th July - Kyoto
  • 27th July - train from Kyoto to Tokyo
  • 28th July to 30th July - Tokyo to Studio Ghibli museum and around sightseeing
  • 31st July - flight home from Narita airport

My partner is staying on and returns to the UK on the 11th August 2016, I think his plan is either to head back south or to the north.

I have tried to price up individual trips but have failed miserably so far! I was thinking of a 3 week JRP but will we be using it much considering we are spending a week in Kyoto and I don't know if we can use it getting around there?

I don't know if it's worth buying or not, or if my partner should get one? Also can you buy a 3 week pass and then a week one (as he's out there for 4 weeks in total).

Thanks for any advice you can give :)

Hello Rina,

Looking at your itinerary, I would suggest buying normal tickets. A 7 day JR Pass is great for a return Tokyo - Kyoto/Osaka but you have more than 7 days between the return trip and don't add up enough in travel costs to a point where savings with a 14 day JR Pass can be made.

That could change by adding a side trip to Hiroshima and a day trip to Nikko from Tokyo though, or perhaps somewhere else.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi,

Sorry to ask again but we've had an itinerary change and wondered if a 7 day pass might be worth it for the first leg of our journey now?

Start of trip is the same but now on the 17th July we're going to Mount Koya from Tokyo, then on the 18th leaving there to go to Osaka. 20th is then to Kyoto.

So Tokyo to Mt Koya, Mt Koya to Osaka, Osaka to Kyoto.

I was wondering if we bought a 7 day pass for the 16th July onwards it might be cheaper than all the individual trains?

Thank you for all your help :)

Hi Rina,

A 7 day JR Pass could be useful if you erturn to Tokyo after Osaka/Kyoto. Otherwise I would stick with normal tickets :)

Hope this helps!
Daniel
