Hello, we are visiting Japan in September.
We are starting our visit in Hiroshima and from there we would like to stop in Kobe for a day, then Osaka, Koyoto and end in Tokyo. Any suggestions on our route? Would the 7 day jrpass cover all the segments we would like to travel?
Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks, Dave and Vishy

Hello there,

Traveling from Hiroshima - Tokyo is basically traveling the entire Shinkansen (bullet train) route trough central Japan. There are many good stops directly on the Shinkansen. Such as Himeji, Kobe, Osaka, Kyoto, Nagoya, Yokohama and Hakone.

Addionnaly it is easy to make side trips as well. Think of Nara, the Japanese Alps (Takayama, Kanazawa and Matsumoto). The JR Pass will cover travel between all these pages.

Is there anything you are interested in? I could give you some specific recommendations if you let me know.

Thanks for the quick reply.
So am I safe to assume that we are getting our money's worth by buying the 7 day pass? I tried to price the individual segments but was having a tough time. Are all the routes and options in the guide we receive with our jrpasses?
Thanks, Dave and Vishy

Hi again!

I would have to see your final itinerary to say for sure. Looking at ticket prices however it would be easy to cover the price of a 7 day JR Pass. For instance Hiroshima - Osaka is ¥ 10,230 and Osaka - Tokyo is ¥ 14,720. Almost 25,000yen together. The 7 day JR Pass is ¥ 29,110. So it would be easy to cover that price.

See this blog post on how to plan with Hyperdia. All options and routes mentioned by you and me are covered by the JR Pass. You may however still need to use local transport in places which is not covered by the JR Pass, such as the subway or local travel within the Hakone area.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hello again, so we finalized our route, but I am a hard time using hyperDia to figure out the price.so our first portion is from Hiroshima to Kobe, the next day we would like to go from Kobe to Kyoto, and after two days we would like to get as fast as possible to tokyo, where we will spend 3 nights. Unfortunately there won't be time for any side trips. So should we still by the rail pass, or just buy individual
Any suggestions on a nice Royokan in Kobe?
Thanks for your help, Daveand Vishy

Hi Dave and Vishy,

Depending on the amount of local travel you will do with the JR Pass you will about break even. The advantage I see for considering the JR Pass is that you can use the bullet train from Kobe to Kyoto (instead of the local service) and you have one ticket for all your travel.

I don't have a specific Ryokan that I can recommend in Kobe. However my Japanese colleague that https://rlx.jp/ is a good website for booking Ryokans.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel

Are there any JR trains that you cant use the JR Pass on........are these the Nozomi trains?

Is there a train times or timetable on-line that shows excluded trains?

Cheers

Richard
