Hi there,

My two mates and I are headed to the wonderful land of Japan for the first time. I'm in way over my head trying to figure if the JR Pass we are about to break bank on will suffice our trip..

1st March Arrival at Narita International Airport Terminal 3 to Nozawaonsen
2nd March to 4th March: Snowboarding
4th March Travel from Nozawaonsen to Osaka
5th March to 12th March: Day trips to Nara, Kyoto and Universal Studio
12th March Travel from Osaka to Tokyo
13th March to 19th March : Day trips to Tokyo Disney, Ghibli Musem, Fujiq theme park and Daikoku futu.
19th March: Toyko to Narita Airport (Hometime)

I've tried using hyperdia but wasn't sure what options where covered under the JR Pass.

Any input from anyone who knows what I'm walking into will be greatly greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,
Bonnie

Hi Bonnie,
You can take the JR trains most of the way to where you want to go. For Nozawa, you can take the train to Iiyama but then you'll need to pay for the 40 minute bus ride the rest of the way (700 yen).
However, you would need a 14 day pass to complete your long distance travel, and what you have so far does not make a 14 day pass pay off. Fortunately there are many places you can go between Mar 5-12 to at least make you break even. You could take a day trip to Himeji and a day trip to see Hiroshima/Miyajima. Okayama and Takamatsu are also possible. It's up to what you want.
For Hyperdia, under "More Options", be sure to uncheck the Nozomi box since you can't ride that train using the pass.

Good luck.

Hi Bonnie,

The best thing to do is have a look at ticket prices and see how they stack up against the JR Pass.

Narita Airport - Nozowa-Onsen: ¥ 11,120
Nozawa-Onsen to Osaka ¥ 12,470
Osaka - Nara (return) ¥ 1,600
Osaka - Kyoto (return) ¥ 1,120
Osaka - Universal Studio (return) ¥ 360
Osaka - Tokyo ¥ 13,940

For a total of ¥ 40.610 this is below the cost of a 14 day JR Pass of ¥ 46.390. So unless you plan on adding more travel, it would more economic to buy normal rail tickets. A day trip from Osaka to Hiroshima and/or Miyajima would easily covers this.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
