Hi all. I'm travelling with 3 friends to Japan this March. We land in Tokyo on Thursday 23rd and plan to start using our 7 day rail pass on Sunday the 26th. On Mon 27th we are using an organised day trip to Hakone with http://www.japanican.com/en/tour/detail/F808/. The tour finishes in Odawara at approximately 7pm.

I'm wondering if there will be late trains from Odawara to Kyoto after 7pm and how long they will take. Also, would this type of ticket be included in our JR pass?

Last question, do you think we need to do an organised trip like this or could we just get the train to Hakone ourselves and make our own way around the area? Thanks, Kieran.

Thanks in advance!

Hi,
You can see regular fares, routes and schedules on Hyperdia.
Under "More Options", be sure to uncheck the Nozomi box since you can't ride that train using the pass.
Trains in Japan stop just around midnight. Yes, it is covered by the JR Pass.

You certainly don't need to join a tour. It is much easier to do it yourself not to mention the freedom to go where you want, when you want, and for how long you want. Many people follow the Loop Course which is easy and covers the whole area - get an early morning start and enjoy yourself.

Good luck.
