Tokyo to Osaka travel help

Hi Daniel

I am travelling to Japan for the first time this April. My itinerary is a follows:

  • Tokyo to Kawaguchiko (lakes) on 18th April
  • Kawaguchiko to Nagoya on 20th April
  • Nagoya to Kyoto on 23 April
  • Kyoto to Osaka on 26 April

I'd love your help with figuring out the best value method of transport between these locations eg. Japan rail pass or something else? Is it true that you can't use the JP between Tokyo and Kawaguchiko, and if so, would it be a best way and type of ticket for my itinerary.

Thank you in advance.

Hi Aneta,

I checked your itinerary for the best option(s) and think it would to best to buy normal tickets here. As they will cost less than a 7 day JR Pass. A JR Pass would be good if used for a return Tokyo - Kyoto.

It is true that the JR Pass only covers part of the way to Kawaguchiko, for details see:

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Many thanks Daniel, that’s super helpful.
Is there a website or an app where I can check the train timetable and fares for my itinerary? I’m not sure if I’d need to buy tickets online ahead of time or on the day of travel at the rail station so any pointers here would be greatly appreciated. Also, does my itinerary mean I’d be travelling on slow trains or are these also the fast bullet trains?

Thank you in advance

For travel times, I recommend learning to plan with Hyperdia this way you can find any route/timetable and more. It's a great tool for planning with the JR Pass. We also have a useful interactive map with all JR lines included. They have an App too.

You can use the bullet train between Nagoya and Kyoto.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
