Dear Japan Rail,

I will be in Japan from 6 October to 13 October. I land in Tokyo (Haneda), will spend a few days in Tokyo before heading to Kyoto. From Kyoto, I would like to make a day trip to either Okunoshima or Nara, before heading back to Tokyo. From Tokyo I will then fly off from Narita. Can you please advise on a good route to take, and also whether I should buy the Japan Rail Pass?

Thank you!

Hi there,

A 7 day JR Pass would be great for this plan. This because the 7 day JR Pass is about the same price as a normal return ticket Tokyo - Kyoto on the Shinkansen. Basically any additional travel you wish to do is free. For instance to Nara or all rail travel involved to Okunoshima.

Travel from Tokyo - Kyoto is directly done using the Shinkansen (bullet train) and very easy. There are also direct local trains between Kyoto and Nara.

For Okunoshima take the JR to eitherTadanoumi or Okunishima and then ferry from there.

Hope this helps!
Daniel
