Dear

I am going to Japan this Nov for a business trip of 2 days in Tokyo so I will extend for a week to explore Japan together with my mom.
My tentative itinerary will be
Sat: arrive Narita 8AM. Go to Tokyo and visit modern parts of the city
Sunday: take train to Nikko and spend 1 day-night in Nikko (tosho-gu area then Nikko lake area)
Monday: Edo wonderland park in the morning then back to Tokyo and explore the ancient parts of the city
Tue and Wed: meeting in the office. Looking for a guide to assist my mom during those 2 days in Tokyo
Thu: train to Kyoto and enjoy the city
Fri: Kyoto in the morning and leave for Nara in the afternoon then back to Kyoto in the evening.
Sat: go to Himeji then take train to Osaka
Sun: to airport in Osaka and go home at 10am

  1. I wonder if the itinerary is too rush? 1 day for Nikko and 1 day for Kyoto is to litle?
Should I replace Nikko by a shorter trip to Fuji mountain or Hakoke?
Is it worth to spend half day for Nara and half day for Himeji while spend only 1 day for Kyoto?
  2. Will the above work if I extend for 1 more day Monday?
  3. If I buy JR pass, when should I activate it?

Thanks in advance

Hello there,

1 and 2.) I do think a bit more time in Kyoto would be nice but would not see how to change your plan to include it in. Maybe doing half a day trip to Himeji and spending the other half in Kyoto is a better idea. A one night in Nikko is enough to see the whole town, main sights and have a good hike.

3.) I would recommend start using the JR Pass the day that you start for Nikko.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
