Hey guys!

I'm trying to figure out what is covered by the JR pass and whether I should be getting the 7 or 14 pass. I would appreciate if you could clarify my understanding.

Here is my itinerary:

Day 1 to 5: Arrive in Tokyo and straight to Shinjuku (Day 3: go to Five Lakes)
Day 6: Shinjuku to Nagano
Day 7: Nagano to Osaka
Day 8, 9, 10: From Osaka, take day trips to Kyoto, Nara, Kobe
Day 11: Osaka to Hiroshima
Day 12: Hiroshima to Tokyo/Shinjuku
Day 13: Tokyo/Shinjuku to Haneda Airport

I think the 7 day pass starting on Day 6 and ending Day 12 is probably the best in terms of saving money. Do you agree?

I also just did a quick search using the 'Japan Trains' app (as recommended by Hyperdia). The route from Nagano to Osaka via Kanazawa is covered by the JR line. Is that correct?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Cheers,
Wendy

Hello Wendy,

For this itinerary a 7 day JR Pass would work very very well! Even with a 14 day JR Pass help you make savings but since you'll do all longer distance travel in a 7 day period (day 6-12) you could do it all with a 7 day pass.

Travel within Tokyo is not very expansive and it is more economic to just buy normal ticket or use a day pass. Such as a Metro Day Pass or a JR Tokunai day pass. These can be purchased at local ticket machines.

The route from Nagano (via Kanazawa) to Osaka is covered by the JR Pass. There's also a limited express train once a day from Nagano direct Osaka station. This is also a very nice route as it passes around Mount Fuji and you can have some great views when the weather is nice. This is the limited Shinano express. This route is also covered by the JR Pass but does take a good amount of time, although you don't have any transfers.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
