I'm planning a trip to Japan in Spring 2017. Dates are 3/4 to 15/5
My itinerary in brief is as follows:
Arrive at Narita airport
3 days Tokyo
5 days Kyoto with day trips to Himeji, Kobe and Osaka
2 days Kanazawa
1 night Shirakawago
2 days Takayama
Take train from Takayama to Tokyo to catch our flight back from Hanedo airport.

Please advise me whether I need to purchase 7JR pass and Kansai Thru pass?

Hello there,

A JR Pass is definitely the better option here! You can use it for travel to Kyoto, all your day trips, Kanazawa, Takayama and back to Tokyo. While a Kansai pass would only cover day trips to Himeji, Kobe and Osaka.

You can use the JR Pass Fare Calculator to find an approximate ticket cost of a single route or even your full itinerary.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
