Hi
I am planning a 8 night visit in November arriving in the evening and paying for local transfer to hotel near Skytree Tokyo. 2 night in Tokyo, a night or maybe two in Kyoto, up into the alps to Nagano or similar for 1-2 nights then return to Toykyo for final nights accomodation. Flying from Narita airport. I intend to use the JR pass 7 day pass. Using Hyperdia it seems I would need to return to Tokyo before going up to Nagano making for too much travel time, I would prefer a round trip type of option. I only have firm booking for first two nights so still flexible on itinerary or using JR pass. Any suggestions appreciated.

Hi,

It would help more if you could give more info on specifically where in Nagano. It could be that you don't have to return to Tokyo at all before going to Nagano. You could for example go to Nagoya, and then take a limited express train. Another option is going by way of Kanazawa and the Hokuriku region (and Kanazawa is worth seeing as well).

I would highly recommend staying in Kyoto for at least 2 nights - for all that Kyoto offers, as well as the distance/time it takes, it would be well worth committing more of your time and energy into it. Taking half a day to see Nara is well worth it too.

If you have 8 nights in Japan, you could use your pass one way on the Narita Express but not both ways. If you want to save money one way, you could try the 1000 yen bus.

Best of luck.

Thank you Toraneko,
The western style accomodation which we prefer seems to be most expensive in Kyoto. We also assumed this area may attract the most crowds and queues.
We will look at Kanazawa, does this have a JR fast connection to Kyoto?
I was looking at Nagano (which I think is a city) as opposed to the larger prefecture. Seeing the Alps and and some of the less populated regions on route (even if just out the train window ) appeals to us.
Similarly we looked to Nara and found it to perhaps offer more to our interest than Kyoto so could just go there via Kyoto.
We are not looking for night life, tours or shopping. Just some cultural sites, great gardens, nature reserves low key food outlets and the same.
We will choose to activate the 7 day pass on the morning after arrival.
Thanks once again for your quick reply, it has been most helpful.
