Tokyo - Kyoto - Osaka

Hi,

I am planning for a koyo trip to Japan on the last week of November and first week of December 2016:

Day 1: Arrive Narita Airport at 8.30am and travel via JR Narita Express to Tokyo Station. Take Shinkansen to Kyoto.
Day 2 to 8: Visit Kyoto and make day trips to Osaka.
Day 9 to 11: Visit Tokyo. Hotel in Shinjuku area.
Day 12: Depart Tokyo. Travel to Narita Airport with JR Narita Express.

Is it better to, or worth purchasing a 7-day pass or a 14-day pass, or a combination of 7-day + local subway/train tickets in Tokyo?

Your advice is greatly appreciated as it will help to plan my trip better.

Thank you!

Hi there,

I would advise a 7 day JR Pass if you could make the return Tokyo - Kyoto/Osaka within 7 days but as it is now, my advise would simply be to buy normal tickets as you travel. This because the JR Pass is best used for longer distances, think Tokyo - Kyoto or Tokyo - Osaka. As it is planned now, you would spend more than 7 days before returning to Tokyo.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thanks Daniel-san!

Yes I agree that it is best to reduce my stay in Kyoto to 7 days to capitalise on the savings offered by JR Pass. And yes, since shopping is the main focus in Tokyo, it makes sense to purchase train or subway tickets on the go. 😊
