Tokyo - Kyoto - Osaka

Hi. I am just learning to use the JR Pass. I am travelling with my father to Japan on December.

We are arriving at Haneda airport on sunday 13th and we are going directly to Kyoto. My first question is, can we buy the JR Pass at the airport and activate it then?

As i saw, with the JR Pass we can take the Monorail up to Hamamatsucho and then the Yamanote line up to Tokyo. Then take the Shinkansen (Hikari trains) to Kyoto. My first question, is how often do these trains go to Kyoto??

Once in Kyoto, we will go one day to Osaka, coming back on the same day at night. If i understood right, we can take with the JR Pass the Shinkansen (Kodama trains) for both ways, right??

We will go back to Tokyo on Thursday using the Shinkansen again. And then we will use the Yamanote line to go up to Shinjuku, where is our hotel in Tokyo.

Our last visit will be Yokohama. Is there a train covered by the JR Pass to go to Yokohama?? Or shall we take the metro lines?

Aaah, and another question: can we use the JR Pass for local buses or metro lines at Kyoto or Tokyo. I guess we can't, but i want to be sure!

Thank you very much!

Andrés

Hi Andrés,

Yes - The JR Pass can be activated right away at Haneda Airport and covers travel from there all the way to Kyoto (and beyond). The Monorail has services at least every 10min, Yamanote line 3-4 min and Hikari Shinkansen every 30min.

You can also use the Shinkansen, both Kodama and Hikari from Kyoto - Shin-Osaka both ways.

Travel On the Yamanote line and travel to Yokohama are also covered by the JR Pass, you can even use the Shinkansen from Tokyo - Shin-Yokohama if you wish to do so.

Local trains run by JR are included, buses and the metro in Kyoto are not. Though you should be able to see most in Tokyo just using the JR.

Hope you find this useful!

Thank you ver much for your quick response! your answer is very helpful!

But now i have new questions haha

I've seen there are several trains run by JR in Osaka that i could use. Until what time (what hour) do they work?
for example, if i need to take the train back from Osaka to Kyoto at 10 or 11 pm, do the local trains run by JR in Osaka work until that hour?? (for example if i need to go from Tennoji station to Shin Osaka in the Haruka line)

Thanks again!

Hi Andrés,

Most trains run until midnight. So if the trip takes one hour, the last train will depart at around 11 pm. Be sure though to check departures ahead of time. Using websites like www.hyperdia.com
