Hello,

I have an itinerary that is:
Narita - Shinjuku
Shinjuku - Kyoto
Kyoto - Osaka
Osaka - Kansai

I was just wondering how much the legs would cost approximately and whether the JR pass would be a good idea. Also, I just wanted to confirm that it would not cover short trips within such as going to Disneyland, Tsukijishjo and Roppongi Hills when in Tokyo?

Thanks in advance!

Hi there,

Probably for a trip like this it would not be worthwhile purchasing a 7 day pass unless you do further travel. Here is the cost breakdown for you:

  1. Narita airport terminal 1 > Shinjuku(jr): ¥3310, (84mins, 89km)
  2. Shinjuku(jr) > Kyoto: ¥13420, (182mins, 517km)
  3. Kyoto > Osaka: ¥540, (28mins, 42km)
  4. Osaka > Kansai airport: ¥3340, (57mins, 64km)

JR ticket cost: ¥20610 for 4 legs

You can look up precise train timetables and costs at the Hyperdia travel planning website and learn how to use Hyperdia for JR Pass holders through our video blog.

Hope this helps!

Thank-you! That was very helpful.

Just to confirm, the JR pass wouldn't benefit me with any local travels such as to Disneyland, Tsukijishjo and Roppongi Hills while staying in Shinjuku? Those are purely through travel on TokyoMetro?

Ooops - sorry, missed that.

The JR Pass will certainly be useful while in Tokyo, and will give you access to Disneyland (Maihama station) for sure and will cover a lot of the travel to other locations too if you plan in advance. Here's a map of JR lines in Tokyo for reference.

There will be no escape from using the Metro in Tokyo I think, but if you remember the JR Yamanote line (green color) which is a big loop line that connects Shinjuku with lots of great locations around Tokyo then you should make good savings.

Hope this helps!
