Could anyone telle me if the japan rail pass for one week and my itinerary is ok?

On my arrival to Tokyo I plan to stay there two or three days, and then move southwards to Kyoto for another 4 days, visiting also Nara. Then I'd love to travel to Nagano and stay there at an Onsen. Then back to Tokyo and Narita to fly back home :(

I have 12 complete days in Japan. I though of buying the jr pass for a week to travel imn the country, whereas while staying in Tokyo (and trains from/to Narita) use the Suica card.

What do you think? Is the JR PAss worth it for this travel?

Thank you very much ;)

Hi there!

A 7 JR Pass would work out great here, given that you return to Tokyo within it's validity period. You would make some good savings with your travel to Nara and Nagano.

A great alternative to Nagano would be to visit Matsumoto which has some great Onsen too and a lot of beautiful nature.

The [Suica + Nex] package would be great for your travel in Tokyo and to and from the Airport but I see you already know this :)

Hope this helps!

Well, I am amazed at the quick response, thanks a lot.

If I may I have another question: what about day trips from Tokyo to nearby areas/towns? Would I need to extend the JR railpass to the 14 - days, or a return ticket is ok? Any suggestions for this?

I will check out the Onsen in Matsumoto. I had thought Nagano would be nice because of the pictures I've seen of Onsen with beautiful landsacapesnbut as you mentioned it, I'll give Matsumoto a try.

Thank you again, and have a nice day :)

Hi Olga,

Where would you like to visit and make day trips to from Tokyo?
It really depends on what you would like to see. For instance a return to Kamakura is just around 1,800 yen. However a return to Nikko can quickly ramp up 10-11.000 Yen if traveled by JR. I would recommend buying normal tickets if you just stay around Tokyo and maybe travel to Kamakura/Yokohama and get a 7 day JR Pass for the rest.

Enjoy!
Daniel

Well, I was just asking to weight up possibilities. I don't know about locations around the Tokyo area because I still have to read the guides I have borrowed. Luckily I have 5 weeks to plan the whole trip which I think will be enough. No hurries, it is summertime and the heat makes my brains work slower.

But now at least I have an idea for the draft of the trip I want to plan.

I might be returning to this post in the future if any doubt arise.

You are very helpful.

Muchas gracias,

Olga
