Hi there,

With the above itinerary in mind, it would make most sense to purchase a 21 day JR Pass and use it from Aug 9th - Sept 4th.

Here's a quick breakdown of ticket prices.

Tokyo - Nagoya ¥ 11,090
Nagoya - Kyoto (return) ¥ 11,600
Nagoya - Takayama ¥ 6,030
Kanazawa - Osaka ¥ 7,650
Osaka - Nara (return) ¥ 1,600
Osaka - Himeji (return, Kobe is a stop directly on the route to Himeji). ¥ 7,480
Osaka - Hiroshima ¥ 10,440
Hiroshima - Miyajima (return, including the Ferry). ¥ 1,180
Hiroshima - Kumamoto ¥ 13,330
Kumamoto - Nagasaki ¥ 7,980
Nagasaki - Tokyo ¥ 30,930 ¥ 25,630

For a total of ¥ 104,010 or ¥ 44,360 in savings as the 21 day JR Pass is ¥ 59,350. There's also additional small savings to be made here and there. For instance local travel in Osaka, the sightseeing bus in Hiroshima and part of the way to Shimabara are also covered by the JR Pass.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thanks Daniel, that is extremely useful. My only worry is, wouldn't the 21 day JR pass only take from 9th august to 30th August?

All the trips you listed are trips I can make solely with the JR pass am I correct?

That only really leaves me with getting from and to Narita airport to Shinjuku. The rest would be pretty much tram inside Tokyo. Obviously the Koyasan travel is expected to be outside JR anyway and my Miyakojima travel is flights.

Hi there,

Sorry - I have to apologize. Somehow I totally miscounted! Must have taken Miyako Island as a single day.

Reconsidering, the JR Pass can still be very useful but would require a bit of planning in order to get the most out of it.

I think going for a 1x 14 day JR Pass and a 1x 7 day JR Pass. Use the 14 day JR Pass before Miyako Island and the 7 day JR Pass from Osaka - Hiroshima ... all the way to Tokyo. This would cost a bit more than a 1x 21 day JR Pass but you can still make very considerable savings.

All routes mentioned above are covered by the JR Pass!

Let me know if you would want any help with any specific route!

Hi Daniel

I have purchased the 14 day and 7 day. Given the increased coverage, could you add the other routes available to me please? I intend to use the 14 day from arrival so I can use the Narita Express and the 7 day when back from Miyako Island.

Aug
6 Tokyo
7 Tokyo
8 Tokyo
9 Tokyo - Nagoya
10 Nagoya (Kyoto day trip)
11 Nagoya - Kyoto (for the day) then travel to Takayama
12 Takayama - Kanazawa (is this trip covered please)?
13 Kanazawa - Osaka
14 Osaka (Nara)
15 Osaka (Himeji/Kobe)
16 Osaka
17 Osaka
18 Koya - Overnight
19 Osaka
20 Osaka flying to Miyako
21 -26th Miyako Island
27 Miyako Island - Osaka
28 Osaka - Hiroshima
29 Hiroshima (Miyajima)
30 Hiroshima - Kumamoto
31st Kumamoto - Shimabara

1st Sept Shimabara - Nagasaki
2nd Nagasaki
3rd Nagasaki - Tokyo
4th Tokyo
5th Tokyo - UK

Many Thanks
Kev

Hello again!

Yes Takayama - Kanazawa is covered by the JR Pass.

As for your other question, about other routes? Sorry I am not sure I get it.

I would also recommend using the 14 day JR Pass from Aug 6 - Aug 19 and the 7 day JR Pass from Aug 28th 3rd of Sep.
-Daniel
