Stop in Nagoya or go straight through to Takayama from Narita airport.

I have booked a room in Takayama but have been recently advised that I may not arrive in time for check-in (as my flight arrives at 6.45pm in Narita).
My option is to either stay in Tokyo (not my first choice considering I will be staying there for a good amount of time after my travels) or to stop somewhere in the middle. Is it a good idea to stay the night somewhere in between? I was thinking Nagoya? As I have a JR Pass.
Please help!

Hi,
Yes, that would be the obvious choice. It would take you a minimum of 5½ hours of travel from Narita to Takayama, so you heard correctly.
It would take you about 3 hours to get to Nagoya. You didn't give any dates, but I checked in mid-March and the latest you could leave Narita was 8:44 PM - that should be enough time to get your bags, go through Immigration & Customs, and activate your JR Pass. However, if there is a flight delay or you don't catch the last train.....

You can see regular fares, routes and schedules on Hyperdia.
Under "More Options", be sure to uncheck the Nozomi box since you can't ride that train using the pass.

Good luck.
