should i get the west jr pass?

Should i get the West JR pass?

Hi, i am planning a 7 days trip to Kyoto, Shiragawago and Osaka in Oct with my elderly parents and wonder if it is better for me to get the West JR pass. My itinerary is as follows :

Day 1: Arrive Kansai airport and stay 1 nite at airport hotel.
Day 2: Leave Kansai airport for Kyoto
Day 3 :Travel out to Arashiyama for day trip and back to Kyoto hotel
Day 4: Travel out to Nara for day trip and back to Kyoto hotel
Day 5: Leave Kyoto for Kanazawa (Shiragawago). Stay overnight.
Day 5: Leave Kanazawa for Osaka.
Day 6: Within Osaka
Day 7: Travel to Kansai airport to Osaka.

I noticed that the Kansai-Hokuriku Area pass covers the areas i've planned and wonder if its easier to just get this pass ?
As this pass only allows Non-reserved seats on some trains, does it mean that we have to arrive much earlier in order to get a seat ?

Hi there,

I don't think that a JR West pass would be of use here. However you can indeed consider the Hokuriku area pass for travel between Kyoto - Kanazawa - Shirakawago.

If you do have a JR West Pass, then it is indeed smart to come early to the station (say at least 10min) to secure seating.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Daniel. I am looking specifically at Kansai-Hokuriku Area pass (link attached) . Does it not cover all the places in the above itinerary ? Thanks!

Hi again,

Right! JR West has too many pases out these days to keep track of them all. You can indeed use that pass to cover all travel.
