Should I get a 7 day or 14 day pass?

Hello everyone!

I need help with my transportation throughout Japan. My family (3 adults and 2 kids) have the following itinerary right now:

Day 1-3: Tokyo
Day 4-5: Kanazawa
Day 6: Miyajima
Day 7-10: Kyoto
Day 11: Hakone
Day 12: Tokyo

If I activate 7 day JR pass the day we leave for Kanazawa it'll run out before we leave Kyoto.
1) Does it make sense to buy a 14 day pass or just a one way ticket from kyoto-hakone and hakone-tokyo?
2) I understand that I can use the pass to get around within Tokyo...wondering if it'll justify cost to buy 14 day?

So grateful for this forum...the transportation is overwhelming to me!

Thank you,
Alice

Hi Alice,

Let's have a look at costs and find out. The difference in price between a 7 and 14 day JR pass is: 46,390yen - 29,110yen = 17,280 difference. The cost of a one way Kyoto - Hakone (Odwara station) is ¥ 12,290. While buying a one way ticket is cheaper, you do get 7 additional travel with the 14 day JR Pass and covering the remaining ~5,000yen in travel cost would be really easy with a day trip somewhere.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
