Hi there, I will be Travelling to Japan for 12 days from 18nov to 29 nov, arriving and departing from Kansai international.

I would like to purchase a 7 day JR pass only, and want to travel from Osaka to Tokyo, and include Nara and hakone during the 7 day trip.
My current plan is
1. Osaka for 4 days
----start JR pass---- 2. Osaka to hakone, stay one night
3. Hakone to Nara, then stay at Nara for one night
4. Nara to Tokyo, stay in Tokyo for 4 nights
5. Tokyo back to Osaka.

Does this itinerary make sense? Or will it be too much of a rush? I haven't booked accommodations yet so my plans are still flexible:)

Hi there,

I would recommend booking in Hakone as a stopover to or from Tokyo. As it is directly on the route. As planned now, you would at least spend an additional 2 hours on the train that are not needed.

With 7 days to go on the rail pass, I would do something like:

Osaka 4 days
Start 7 days JR Pass
1.) day trip Nara
2-5.) Travel to Tokyo 3 nights
6.) Travel to Hakone and explore Hakone.
7.) Travel from Hakone to Osaka.

Notice that I had to reduce a number of nights in Tokyo by one. If you do want the full 4 nights, then you could travel directly from Nara to Tokyo (around 5 hours) later on the day after visiting Nara.

Also good to know is that the Shinkansen station for Hakone is called Odawara. From here you can use the Shinkansen directly to Tokyo and Osaka.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
