In march 2016 we (a couple 65+) will be based in Osaka for 3 days only. We would like to travel to Tokyo by bullet train and return by ordinary train perhaps stopping overnight in Nagoya.
what are the options and prices - the pass is only for 7 days and the Kansai pass would not cover this trip.

Hi there,
The Japan Rail Pass is the only pass that covers the Shinkansen from Tokyo - Kyoto. A 7 day JR Pass is the same price as a normal return ticket but now you get 7 days of unlimited travel for the same price.
The Kansai Pass is only for the Kansai Area, which would not help you I am afraid.
Hope this helps,
Daniel
