Hi, I am planning to visit Japan in late November. I already booked a return flight via Kansai Airport and 3 nights stay in Kyoto. I'm thinking to get JR 7 Days Pass, probably the route from Osaka-Kyoto-Tokyo. But, at the same time I want to visit Takayama as well. So, may I know whether it is possible to use the said pass to Takayama? Or I have to pay additional fare. Below is my itinerary :

Day 1 - from Kansai Airport to Kyoto
Day 2 - Kyoto
Day 3 - Day trip to Tokyo as I plan to visit few places only (Shibuya, Harajuku, Asakusa). Back to Kyoto
Day 4 - Kyoto to Takayama
Day 5 - Takayama to Osaka
Day 6 - Osaka
Day 7 - Fly out from Kansai Airport.

I have hear about Takayama-Hokuriku Area Pass. But, I will have to drop Tokyo which I am okay. But, my concern is this doesn't allow me to ride Tokaido Shinkansen which can be time-saving for my trip. Do advise, if there is alternate route.

Thanks.

Hi there,

There is not really a viable alternative rail route instead of the Tokaido Shinkansen to Nagoya. You could however just buy a one way ticket and use the Hokuriku Pass from there. I think that would simply make the most sense, considering the rest of the itinerary.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel-san,

Does it means i can't use JR 7 Days Pass for Nagoya to Takayama? I need to purchase separate ticket? I thought i can use it nationwide. I really wanted to visit Tokyo.

Come to think about it, I will have no chance to experience Japan's bullet train, if i use Hokuriku.

Sorry that I asked so many questions as I'm a little confuse on how the train system works in Japan. Anyway, thanking you in advance for the advise.

Cheers!

Hi again!

You can use the JR Pass from Nagoya - Takayama with the 7 day JR Pass.

However you can't if you only have a Hokuriku Pass.

Does that clear things up?
