Hi there,

I am travelling to Japan on April 2014 and below is my main itinerary:
05 April --> Arrive at Osaka
06 April --> Yoshino
07 April --> Kyoto
08 April --> Kyoto
09 April --> Osaka
10 April --> Hiroshima
11 April --> Tokyo
12 April --> Tokyo
13 April --> Lake Kawaguchi
14 April --> Disneyland
15 April --> Tokyo
16 April --> Depart from Tokyo
From 05 to 10 April, my based will be in Osaka.
From 11 to 16 April, my based will be in Tokyo.

I am planning to buy 7 days JR Pass, and the rest of them will use another pass or even single ticket.
I need your help, when is the best time to activate the JR Pass?
Is it better if I use JR Pass when I am based in Osaka or in Tokyo?
My detailed itinerary is not fixed yet, but 05-10 in Osaka and 11-16 in Tokyo is fixed.

Many thanks :)

Hi Linda,

The trick to using the JR Pass as efficient as possible is to cover as much expansive travel with it as possible. From looking at your itinerary, I'd say the best moment to start using it would be from day April 10th until April 16th. This way you would all of your longer distance covered, including the return to the airport on the last day.

If you really want to make the most of your pass, consider adding in a day trip to Nikko, Kamakura or Yokohama from Tokyo.

Have a great trip!
Daniel

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for your reply :)

If I use JR Pass starting from April 10th, what is your suggestion for the days before?
Is it cost effective if I use pass for Kansai are (i.e. Kansai, Kansai Wide, etc.) or single trip ticket better?

For April 5th to April 9th, I need to cover the following:
1. KIX to Osaka
2. Osaka to Kyoto roundtrip x 2
3. Osaka to Yoshino roundtrip

Many thanks for your help :)

Hi Linda,

For Kansai I almost always recommend normal tickets, travel costs are always pretty low and it's hard to make a pass work out.

Here's how I would cover your travel.

1.)Kix - Osaka budget 980 ticket from Kansai Airport to Osaka.

2.)Osaka - Kyoto, normal train tickets 540yen / each way.

3.) Normal tickets using the Metro + Kintetsu line ¥ 1,220 / one way.
