Hi. My friends and I will be in Japan this October for seven days. However i will arrive via Kansai airport ahead of my friends - I will arrive Sunday evening and my friends will arrive the following morning. I will stay overnight in Namba, then follow them to Tokyo. Anyway, we have not finalized yet our itinerary, but these are more or less the places that we will visit:

Sunday - Kansai to Namba
Monday - Namba to Tokyo
Tuesday - Tokyo
Wednesday - Tokyo to Osaka
Thursday - Osaka to Kyoto and Nara
Friday - Osaka
Saturday - Osaka to Kansai Airport

Based on the above, is a JR pass necessary? When will I start using it? From Namba, where will I take the bullet train to Tokyo? Do I need to change trains to get to Tokyo?

Sorry, the railway system is kind of confusing to me.

Thanks.

Hello there,

For this itinerary I would certainly recommend using a 7 day JR Pass. The 7 day JR Pass is about the same price as a normal return ticket Tokyo - Osaka using the Shinkansen. Given that Sunday - Saturday is a full week - I would start using the JR Pass on Sunday. It also covers all the rail travel listed above, so you are pretty much set once you've got the pass.

From Namba to Tokyo. Go to JR-Namba station, take a local service to Shinimamiya and then a local service to Shin-Osaka. From Shin-Osaka you can use a Bullet Train directly to Tokyo station.

The rail system in Japan is very extensive, feel free to ask me any questions you may have!
