Most scenic train view from Tokyo to Nagoya to Takayama. :)

Hi,

My friend and I are planning to travel to Takayama - Shirakawago - Kanazawa in Sept this year. I've been researching on train lines that would offer us the most scenic view. We have a couple of questions that we hope someone can help to answer here :)

1) I've read about the wide view scenic express train to Takayama from Nagoya, where can we purchase the tickets from?

2) I've also read about the Chuo Main Line that stops at all the stations, hence the slowest in traveling between Tokyo and Nagoya, does it offers the most scenic view along the way? How long will it take us to travel to Nagoya if we were to take the Chuo Main Line? I understand that it is not a direct train and we would have to switch to Chuo West Line at Shiojiri Station, is it a complicated way to travel to Nagoya from Tokyo?

Many thanks in advance!!!

Hello there,

1.) The route between Takayana and Nagoya is indeed one of the most scenic routes and a pleasure to travel.

The JR Pass covers the route and seats can be reserved at any JR Station.

2.) I've never done a direct comparison of the Chuo (mainland line) and the Tokaido line that follows the coast. The Tokaido is somewhat faster and you can have good views on Fuji and the coast from it.
You are correct about switching stations on the Chuo line.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Daniel, is the Matsumoto-Nagoya route just as scenic. Or would it be worth leaving a little early in the morning making a detour in Takayama.

Thanks Daniel!! Fall-chrome, would you like to share with me more about the Matsumoto-Nagoya route? What about the detour route in Takayama? How will you plan to do it? Thanks!

Hi again!
The route Matsumoto - Nagoya is also pleasant but I think the view on the route to Takayama is much better.

However the route Nagoya - Nagano is also really nice. On a clear day, you can have some amazing sights of Fuji.

Do you want to visit Takayama and then travel on the Matsumoto?

Hi Danial San!! Thanks for tips again!! We plan to stay in Takayama for 2 nights before setting off to Shirakawago for another 2 more nights, and another night in Kanazawa before heading back to the city via hokuriku shinkansen. We're planned up for our first day in Takayama and left with itinerary ideas for the 2nd day. I guess we could travel up to Matsumoto if it offers spectacular sightseeing experience? ^^ what's in Matsumoto?

Going to Takayama, Kanazawa and Shirakawago sounds like a great place. The new Hokuriku Shinkansen is also very nice.

Matsumoto is also a nice visit but it may be hard to plan it in. Matsumoto has a beautiful castle, there are also amazing hikes to be made in the forests surrounding Matsumoto and it makes for a good base to make a day trip to Kamikochi from.
