Luggage storage and the best route from Narita to Ryogoku to Mejiro

Hi there
Could you please advise the best way to get from Narita Airport Terminal 3 to Ryogoku Station allowing us to store luggage somewhere en-route (1 large backpack and 1 medium suitcase). We arrive at 9.05am on September 23 and have booked tickets to see the sumo that day before continuing on to our accommodation at Mejiro station. We know that storing the luggage complicates things a little but we would rather go straight to Ryogoku than have to go via Mejiro and miss some of the sumo. Could you please help us? We have tried to research whether the Ryogoku Kokugikan has luggage storage but I believe they do not have many lockers. If you have any local knowledge of where we could store our luggage we would be very grateful. And could you please also advise whether we can purchase tickets at the airport for the entire trip? - Narita – Rogoku – Mejiro.
Thanking you in advance.

Hi there,

I made an example itinerary for you here. You can adjust the date and time at the bottom to your own liking.

You will find lockers at Ryogoku station, which looks like a good option to me. Otherwise Nippori station will be a good alternative.

You can indeed buy a ticket for the full route at the airport, or get a Suica card to make your life even more easy.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thank you Daniel for your help. I am a little confused by the difference between the ticket cost and seat reservation cost? Do you have to reserve a seat on trains as well as pay for the ticket? And do you recommend that we buy the ticket prior to our arrival or would it be okay to just book when we get there?

Regards

Mary

Hi Mary,

When looking at the price at Hyperdia, always look at the total. This is the price you would pay without a JR Pass.

To give you a bit more of background. Japan has 2 types of tickets:

Called the Fare:
This is the price for the distance travelled and has to be paid on every kind of train.

Then there is a Seat Fee, directly translated from Japanese this would actually mean ticket for high speed. This ticket is required for high speed trains like the Shinkansen bullet trains and other limited express trains. A train is considered a local service when there is no seat fee.

Then there is a seat reservations charge.

Lastly, there is a price for seat reservation. You will find this on the right of any route found in Hyperdia. This is the cost for reserving a seat and is generally between 200-500yen. Without this kind reservation, you can only take a non-reserved seat on Shinkansen and ltd. express trains.
The JR Pass covers all these kinds of charges and most travellers who use the JR Pass are not even aware of their existence.

Seat reservations can generally be made on the day of travel. Only during busy periods like new year and golden week are normal tickets required.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
