Kyoto - Yakushima - Osaka time table with JR Pass

Hi!

I'm trying to figure out with Hyperdia how I can travel from Kyoto to Yakushima and then back to Osaka using the JR Pass, but I'm not sure if I understand completely and would be ever so grateful if someone could check my itinerary:

October 13
Leaving Kyoto early to be able to take the ferry from Kagoshima. According to http://www.tykousoku.jp/ I should be able to take the ferry leaving at 13.20 from Kagoshima and arrive at Yakushima at 15.10. Is this accurate? As the site is in Japanese I am not entirely sure ...

That means I have to be in Kagoshima at least 1 hour before. According to Hyperdia, I can take a train leaving from Kyoto at 07.39 and arrive at Kagoshima at 12.26. Would that be the best option for me? Is that whole travel covered with the JR-card? When using Hyperdia, should I simply type in "Kyoto" and "Kagoshima"? I see there is also the "Kagoshima-chuo" option, what is that? Is "Kagoshima" the best option to use for reaching the harbor and ferry?

October 16
We would like to be in Osaka at 19.00 at the latest. According to http://www.tykousoku.jp/ I should be able to take the ferry from Yakushima at 10.45 and arrive at Kagoshima 12.30, is that correct? According to Hyperdia, I should then take a train from Kagoshima 14.12 and arrive in Shin-Osaka at 18.44 - is that correct? Is the whole travel covered by the JR card?

A big big thank you if you are able to help me check this!

Kind regards,
Alexandra

Hi there!

Here are some answers for you:

  1. Yes, you are reading the timetable correctly! On the 13th the Jetfoil will leave Kagoshima at 13:20 arriving into Yakushima at 15:05. On the 16th, the jetfoil also does leave at 10:45 arriving at 12:30 into Kagoshima.

  2. To get to the Toppy port (map), you can either get a 15 mins taxi from Kagoshima-chuo (which is the bullet train terminal you will arrive at initially) or you can take a local train from there to Kagoshima station where you can take a 5 mins taxi ride to the toppy port.

  3. Provided you stick to Hikari and Sakura class bullet trains the entire trip there and back is 100% covered by the JR Pass.

  4. You should aim to arrive into Kagoshima-chuo around 12:15 and then hop in a Taxi. The 7:39am service you found from Kyoto should be fine for this.

  5. For return to Osaka, I found the 14:38 train on Hyperdia which will get you into Osaka around 7pm , but if you have found an earlier train, that will be fine (provided it is a Sakura or Hikari service).

I think that's all the questions you had, but if you'd like any further help don't hesitate to ask!
