JR Pass for my Itinerary - Worth it?

Hello everyone,

Sorry for posting yet another post on whether the JR Pass would be worth it... But I am having a hard time trying to figure it out.

I will spend 3 weeks in Tokyo in February. Commuting from Kameido to Akihabara every day (From hotel to language school), and I expect to travel a lot within Tokyo in the afternoon/evenings (and to Kawagoe once).
I will be traveling outside Tokyo only 5 days within these 3 weeks:
One day trip to Kamakura
One day trip to Nikko
One day trip to Takayama
One weekend to Matsumoto - Nagano - Jigokudani.

The JR Pass for 3 weeks being 60k Yen, do you believe I would be better off without one?
I'm not so sure about the Tokyo commuting discounts available, or whether I could do some trips by bus or express trains which are cheaper and faster than the JR ones, which makes everything difficult to forecast.

Many thanks,
Kevin

Hello Kevin,

It is best to look at ticket prices and see if any savings can be made using the JR Pass.

To start with Kameido - Akihabara (160yen/one way x20) = 3,200yen
Tokyo - Kamakura ¥ 1,840 (return)
Tokyo - Nikko ¥11,160 (return including Shinkansen)
Tokyo - Takayama ¥ 14,710
Takayama - Tokyo ¥ 14,710
Tokyo - Matsumoto ¥ 6,900
Matsumoto - Nagano ¥ 2,840
Nagano - Tokyo ¥ 8,200

For a total of ¥ 63,560, while the 21 day JR Pass is ¥ 59,350yen. So you could already make savings using a 21 day JR Pass so far. I do have to add in some notes, for instance there are more economic ways of traveling to Nikko that cost less and travel from Nagano to Jigokudani is not included. At the same time, I have omitted travel to and from the Airport, and other local travel you may do such as to Kawagoe. So all together I think it matches out and I do think that the 21 day JR Pass makes for an interesting option here, it will also service as a single ticket for a lot of your travel.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
