JR Pass doesn't seem cheaper?

Hi,

We're looking at the following:

  1. Narita --> Shinjuku
  2. Shinjuku --> Myoko Kogen
  3. Myoko Kogen --> Kyoto
  4. Kyoto --> Tokyo
  5. Disney day trip
  6. Tokyo --> Narita

Using Hyperdia.com it seems to come out at almost exactly the same price (when including a little extra for a few short private trips) ... so is it even worth doing? If it does cost the same, is it easier to travel with a JR Pass or just buy ordinary tickets? If we're using ordinary tickets, do we need to book in advance or can we just show up to the train station?

Thanks very much for your help!

Cheers,

Phil

Hi Phil,

You can make good savings using a JR Pass with the above itinerary, however is does depend on how many days you plan to spend in each place and how many days you would require a JR Pass for.

I can give you a price breakdown if you post your itinerary with the amount of days spend in each place.

Cheers!
Daniel

Hello again!

Airport T3 11/02/2016 Shinjuku ¥ 2,990
Shinjuku 13/02/2016 Myoko Kogen ¥ 10,580 (to Nagano station for Myoko)
Myoko Kogen 17/02/2016 Kyoto ¥ 13,450
Kyoto 19/02/2016 Tokyo ¥ 13,400
Tokyo 20/02/2016 Disney ¥ 220
Disney 20/02/2016 Tokyo ¥ 220
Tokyo 22/02/2016 Airport T3 ¥ 2,990

Looking at days, I recommend using a 7 day JR Pass for travel from 13/02 to 19/02. This way you cover ¥ 37,430 in tickets, or ¥ 8,320 in savings. As the 7 day JR Pass is ¥ 29,110.

You can also buy a discounted return trip on the Narita Express as companion to your JR Pass.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
