Hi Daniel san,

Below is our itinerary for Japan trip. My question is whether it is worth getting the JR pass (7 day/14 days), and which route is covered by JR pass. Are the bullet trains between Tokyo - Nagoya - Kyoto - Osaka - Tokyo covered under JR pass? We are thinking of getting the 7 day pass starting 18th Dec.

14th Dec - Arrive at Narita airport around 4pm
15th - 18th Dec - Tokyo
18th Dec - stop by Fuji on route to Nagoya
18th Dec night - 21st Dec - Nagoya
21st - 22nd Dec - Kyoto
22nd - 24th Dec - Osaka
24th night - 26th noon - Tokyo
Fly out 26th late afternoon from Narita airport

Thanks so much,

Hi there,

Bullet trains are all covered on this route and you can make nice savings using a 7 day JR Pass for Tokyo - Nagoya - Kyoto - Osaka - Tokyo. This would mean returning to Tokyo on the 24th and I see that you've planned this well already.

For your Fuji stop, consider making a stopover at Hakone as it is directly on the route to Nagoya and has a bullet train station (Odawara station).

So you are good to go if you ask me, enjoy Japan!

Thank you so much.

Is the JR pass sufficient for local travel within Tokyo/Nagoya/Kyoto/Osaka? Or should we plan on taking local tickets? Also, if we activate the 7 day JR pass on 17th Dec evening, will it be valid until 24th Dec evening? Please let me know.

Your website is very useful to visitors such as me.

Thanks,

Anne

Hi Anne,

You may still have to buy local tickets for transport run not by JR. For instance the Tokyo Metro is not included.

Also please note that the JR Pass is counted in full days and the first day is counted as a full day, no matter what time you start using it.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Would you recommend the 14 day JR pass for our itinerary? Or the 7 day?

Definitely a 7 day JR Pass, given that you would cover the major routes with it.
