Hi,

Could you please help me out with the following itinerary? Our flight into Japan arrives at Haneda Airport and we leave Japan through Kansai Airport. Our itinerary is as follows:

DATE DEPT ARR
22-Mar HANEDA AIRPORT > SHINJUKU
24-Mar SHINJUKU > NIKKO
NIKKO > SHINJUKU
26 Mar SHINJUKU > FUJIKYU
FUJIKYU > SHINJUKU 28-Mar SHINJUKU > TAKAYAMA via Matsumoto
30-Mar TAKAYAMA > KYOTO
31-Mar KYOTO > NARA
NARA > KYOTO
2-Apr KYOTO > OSAKA
3-Apr OSAKA > MIYAJIMAGUCHI
MIYAJIMAGUCHI > OSAKA
5-Apr OSAKA > KANSAI AIRPORT

Instead of a 14 day JR Pass, I was wondering if we would save money by getting a JR East Pass up to 28 March? And then a 7 day JR Pass for the remainder of the trip?

With a JR East Pass, we could get the direct train from Shinjuku to Nikko (instead of changing trains at Utsonomiya if we had a JR Pass). We would also be able to purchase the discounted bus ticket from Matsumoto to Takayama. Even though we are doing a one way trip, it seems the discounted JR East return bus fare is even cheaper than a full priced one way ticket?

From 30th of March to the end of the trip I'm thinking of buying the 7 day JR Pass as this is when we do the most train travel.

So could you confirm which is the better plan? Buying a JR East Pass and a 7 Day JR Pass or just buy a 14 day JR Pass for the entire trip?

Thank you so much.

Hi there,

I think a 14-day JRPass is the best option in your case, this because it simply costs less (45,100Yen) than a 7 Day JR Pass + 5 day JR west pass (28,300Yen + 20,000Yen = 48,300 Yen) in addition the 14 day pass gives you 2 days of additional travel.

From Matsumoto, you can either take the train or bus the Takayama. The bus is 50 minutes faster in this case but the train is free if you have the JR-Pass :) In case you take the train you will travel to Nagoya and change train there. The route from Nagoya to Takayama is quite pleasant because of the scenery you pass. The train track follows a river that comes down from the mountains in inner Japan and the view can be breathtaking at times. If you feel that the journey from Tokyo --> Matsumoto --> Takayama in one day is too much, consider spending the night in Matsumoto and travel on in the morning.

Hope this helps!
-Daniel
