Hello!

I had already planned for a trip to japan with 4 adults + 2 kids but is now deciding whether getting a JR pass is worth while since i understand JR does not serve many of the city internal private railway. i tried working out the cost by searching through Hyperdia on the time and cost for each ticket. i have work out the full trip transport itinerary as below, on the train station which we will be stopping by. it came out as the cost that will be covered by JR train is approx Yen$104,340, however getting a JR pass is Yen$126,225. Those area not covered within JR will cost Yen$99,630.

I also intend to get a open top bus unlimited ride for 2 days within tokyo ,since many of the area in Tokyo that we will be going is also covered within the open top bus route. so i can skip the trains within tokyo and just travel around via the bus since its unlimited ride and one of the stops is at odaiba where our hotel is. it will be slightly more exp than taking the train, but for unlimited ride which allow us to get off and on at all station will seem to be a advantage and worth the money.

Appreciate if you can advice if its still worth to get a JR pass, especially on my calculation based on the train stn that i be stopping as below.

Thank you in advance for your previous feedback.

Hello there,

I think the best option for your itinerary would simply be to buy tickets as you go. The JR Pass works best if you travel between different regions in Japan. A classic example is making a return Tokyo - Kyoto using the Shinkansen. This costs about the same price as a normal 7 day JR Pass. In your itinerary the most distance you will travel is Tokyo - Nagoya in one go. This simply is not far enough to a point where you can make savings with the JR Pass.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
