Hi

I will be going to japan on 1st Dec from Singapore and reach Tokyo Narita Airport in the morning on 2nd Dec. I need some help in ensuring that my route is plausible using the 14 day JR pass that i plan to buy.

2nd - 6th Dec (5D4N) - Tokyo to Kawaguchiko (we plan go visit Mount Fuji, do paragliding if possible, visit Fuji Q theme park)

6th - 9th Dec (4D3N) - Kawaguchiko - tokyo - Osaka (JR pass will be activated on the 6th Dec. At Osaka we plan to do a day trip to Nara, visit the Osaka Castle and walk around Dotonbori. Any other suggestions for things to do/visit in Osaka?)

9th - 12th Dec (4D3N) - Osaka to Kyoto (JR pass. At Kyoto, we plan to visit the shrines and bamboo forest, explore Gion)

12th - 18th Dec (7D6N) Kyoto to Hokkaido (Sapporo) (JR Pass - how long will it take from Kyoto?)
We are still planning our itinerary here so suggestions on things to do at Hakkaido are welcome! We want to try the onsen and ski if possible.

18th - 20th Dec (3D2N) Hokkaido to Tokyo (JR Pass) (in Tokyo, we plan to visit Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ueno and other tourist attraction on the 18th - is it possible? and 19th Dec)

20th morning - Make our way to the airport (either by airport bus or train - we havent decide)

I'm open to suggestions & changes! Thank you in advance for your responses and suggestions.

Hi there,

While the JR Pass works great with your itinerary. I do suggest looking at travel to Hokkaido, going by rail from Kyoto takes over 12 hours in one go. I see you have about a week there, so it may be smart to plan in a stop or two on the way. Think about Sendai, Hakodate or Hirosaki. Alternatively you could consider looking at a flight from Kansai to Hokkaido.

If you are looking for more places to visit in Osaka, head to the Osaka Aquarium, or the Umeda Floating gardens. There is also Universal studio that is a popular visit.

The JR Pass is valid in Tokyo on all JR lines, including the Yamanote line that loops around Tokyo city and stops at Shinjuku, Ueno, Shibuya and many other major stations.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Hi Daniel

Thanks for your help! I don't really understand when you say make a stop or two on the way; does it mean I stay at probably hokadate for one/two days or just stop for a while to explore the place? What about our luggages if we were to make a short stop?

Just to confirm, the 14 days JR pass works for this itinerary right for travels from tokyo to osaka, kyoto & hokkaido. May I know what's the different between JR pass and Kansai pass? Do I have to purchase that or just pay as I travel? Which is more cost effective?

Judging from our itinerary, do you think we have time to visit Yokohama?

Thanks!
Nurul
