We are travelling as a couple and this is our itinerary - travelling in January 2015.

  • Osaka (2 nights)

  • Mt Koya (1 night)

  • Nara (1 night)

  • Ise (1 night)

  • Kyoto (3 nights)

  • Tokyo (4 nights)

  • Hakuba (5 nights)

Our questions are:

  • Which JR pass should we get? i.e. should we cover the whole trip or part of it and buy the other tickets as we go

  • Will the JR pass cover travel to all of these areas?

  • Is it worth paying extra for a green pass?

Thanks!

Hi there,

I checked your itinerary for the best pass / ticket combi and I would advise buying normal tickets for your travel. Travel within the Kansai area (Osaka, Koya, Nara, Kyoto and also Ise) is not very expensive and you will also be traveling on different train companies when you travel to Koya and Ise, because you would only be restricted with any kind of pass.

As for Green Class, I enjoy traveled in Green Class a lot. Especially since it's a lot more quiet and it's a good way to avoid the traveling crowd. In general though, most people will be completely fine ordinary class but it is money well spend if you don't have to think about it.

Hope this helps!
Daniel
