Itinerary for 2 week trip

Visiting Japan late October for 15 nights in total and would like to travel by train from Tokyo to Kyoto and on to Nagasaki and maybe Kagoshima then back to Tokyo. We have already booked 3 night in Tokyo and 4 in Kyoto. Is this a reasonable itinerary for a 2 week rail pass? Do you have any other suggestions around these areas? Also would it be worth it to go with the green pass or stick with the regular pass? Thanks, Pat

Hi there,

I think so, as long as you plan it ahead of time. Going from Kagoshima - Tokyo in one go is quite a long trip. So I would advise planning in a stopover on the way back. Think of Himeji, Kobe, Shizoaka or maybe Nagoya. All good stops for a day or less.

Green Class can definitely be nice with this amount of travel :)

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thanks! We have been studying the travel guides some more and would like to stop in Hiroshima and maybe Fukuoka too. Current itinerary is:
Tokyo 3 nights, Kyoto 4 nights (including day trip to Nara), Nagasaki 2 nights, Fukuoka 1 nights, Kagoshima 2 nights , Hiroshima 3 nights then back to Tokyo 1 night then fly home. I think maybe the Nagasaki/Fukuoka/Kagoshima section of the trip might be a bit too rushed - if you were to drop one of these places from the Itinerary which would it be, or would you change the amount of time in each place? We are still interested in stopping maybe in Himeji on the way back to Tokyo - how long a stop would we need to get some benefit from the stop? Thanks again for your input,
Pat

Hi again,

Looks like a great trip! I'd prob drop Kagoshima for practical reasons. It's a nice place to hang out but it is furthest away and would add most extra travel time. You can stop at Himeji and see in the castle in about 2hours. A little longer is nicer of course but would not be needed.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thanks! That would give us an extra day in Nagasaki and in Fukuoka. Would it be worth doing a day trip from Fukuoka to Kagoshima or are there other trips you would recommend instead? How far ahead should we book trains (will travel green class). Thanks again,
Pat

Hi again,

If you want to do a day trip from Fukuoka, I'd probably visit Kumamoto or Mt. Aso, or you could visit Sasebo from Nagasaki. You can book trains 1-2 days in advance when you are in Japan and won't have a problem finding seating that way.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
