Please help me to decide whether to get the JR rail pass and when to activate. Also wondering if we are spending too much time in the Hakone-Fuji area and if we should head to Nikko for a day or two at the beginning of the trip. Thank you!

Day 1: arrive Narita, go to Tokyo
Day 2: Tokyo
Day 3: Tokyo to Hakone area
Days 4-6: Hakone and Fuji area
Day 7: travel to Kyoto
Day 8-10: Kyoto with possible day trips
Day 11: travel to Tanabe
Day 12-13: Kumano Kodo trek
Day 14: travel to Koyasan
Day 16: return to Tokyo
Day 19: go to Narita, fly home.

Hello there,

I find it hard to match a JR Pass to your itinerary. While it would be easy to make savings with a 7 day JR Pass here, your travel days are too far apart to effectively make use of one. So instead I would use normal tickets for your trip, as there is not other pass that would be useful heree.

Within Hakone you can use an Hakone Free Pass though.

Hope this helps,
Daniel

Thanks, Daniel-san. Do you feel that we wouldn't use the value of a 21-day?

Best regards,
Nikki

Hi Nikki,

No, at this stage you would have to add quite a bit of travel for a 21 day JR Pass to help you make savings.

All the best,
Daniel

Hi again -

Our itinerary has changed a bit and I am curious if this warrants a reconsideration of whether the pass would be helpful... please let me know your thoughts.

Day 1: arrive Narita, stay overnight in Narita
Day 2: Travel to Hakone Area
Day 2-4: Hakone and Fuji area
Day 5: travel to Kyoto
Day 5-9: Kyoto with possible day trips
Day 9: travel to Koyasan
Day 11: travel to Tanabe
Day 12-13: Kumano Kodo trek
Day 14: travel Nachikatsuura
Day 15: train from Nachikatsuura to Tokyo
Day 19: go to Narita, fly home.

Hi Nikki,

I tried again to match a JR Pass to your itinerary but it still looks like that normal tickets will be the best option for you. Simply because you stay locally a lot of the time. The JR Pass really is best used on longer distances.
