Hi,

My wife and I are spending two weeks in Japan. We arrive in Osaka on October 1 and depart Tokyo (Haneda) on October 15. We intend to get a 7-day JR pass, but would like to know if that is a good idea.

Here is our current itinerary:

Day 1 (Oct. 1) - arrive in Osaka
Day 2 - Osaka
Day 3 - Train to Kyoto (First Day of JR Pass)
Day 4 - Kyoto
Day 5 - Kyoto
Day 6 - Train to Hakone
Day 7 - Hakone
Day 8 - Hakone
Day 9 - Train to Tokyo (Last Day of JR Pass)
Day 10 - Tokyo
Day 11 - Tokyo
Day 12 - Tokyo
Day 13 - Tokyo
Day 14 - Tokyo
Day 15 - Fly back to USA

Does this itinerary look okay? Are there any other potential places to visit on this route? Are we spending too much time in Kyoto or Hakone? Would it be better to get the 14-day pass?

Thank you so much for your help!

Best,
Cody Gray

Hello Cody Gray,

A JR Pass works best if you travel intercity routes in Japan using the JR Pass. For instance, a return Tokyo - Kyoto alone is enough. The route you have from Osaka - Kyoto - Hakone - Tokyo is basically one way with different stops on the route. This means that travel costs are not that much and it will be cheaper to buy a normal tickets.

A Japan Rail Pass would be a good option if you did a bit more travel, for instance making a visit to Hiroshima or adding some day trips from Tokyo.

Kind regards,
Daniel
