Hello

I’m putting together a plan for an upcoming two week trip to Japan.

I have come up with the below and would welcome any advice, suggestions or comments you might have and also whether a 1 week or 2 week JR Pass would be most economical.

When in Tokyo, I am also intending to do one or two day trips to Kamakura and possibly Nikko or Hakone depending on whether I have time although I think Tokyo might keep me too busy!

Tues 16 Arrive Tokyo am
Wed 17 Tokyo
Thurs 18 Tokyo
Fri 19 Tokyo
Sat 20 Leave Tokyo travel to Hiroshima
Sun 21 Hiroshima / Miyajima
Mon 22 Travel to Kyoto
Tues 23 Kyoto
Wed 24 Kyoto
Thurs 25 Nara
Fri 26 Kyoto
Sat 27 Matsumoto
Sun 28 Travel to Toyko
Mon 29 Tokyo
Tues 30 Morning flight

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi there,

Tokyo can indeed keep you busy for a long time! Still a visit to Nikko is also well worth your time :)

Let's have a look at your itinerary and see what JR Pass would match best. The JR Pass is best used when you travel trough Japan and I see that you'll be out of Tokyo for more than 7 days. Given this, I would advise a 14 day JR Pass. There's also more than enough travel in the above itinerary to make savings with the JR pass, in addition the 14 day JR Pass will give you extra flexibility and you could make a day trip whenever you feel like it.

Its a very nice itinerary btw!

Hope this helps!
Daniel

Hi Daniel

Thank you very much for your response and advice - I will definitely go for the 2 week JR Pass.

I have one other question I would welcome advice on. I can’t decide whether to spend two nights in Hiroshima or Miyajima. I’d rather spend two nights in one destination rather than one night in each and I initially thought I would rather stay on Miyajima and visit Hiroshima as a day trip, as Miyajima sounds lovely and peaceful after the ferry stops running and there are fewer visitors.

However, my concern is whether it will be more expensive than Hiroshima (I’m travelling by myself so trying to keep costs down where possible) and also if I will struggle to get an evening meal if I’m not in an expensive ryokan with meals provided.

Any thoughts?

Hi Again

Sorry for the late replay!

I would stay the night in Hiroshima, because there's more to do in the evening and has a very nice admosphere. At the same time, if you want peace and quiet go for Miyajima. Most Japanese visitors leave around 5 pm for some reason and the island gets quiet quickly.

I am not sure about accommodations around Miyajima, however there are several hostels in Hiroshima which are great

Hope this helps :)
Daniel
