Hi,

I will be visiting Japan from 27th Nov to 10th Dec later this year. Planned to be at Nagano from 27th - 2nd, Hakone from 2nd to 4th and Tokyo from 4th to 10th. Tentative itinerary will be:

27th) Arrive at Narita airport and travel to Nagano
28th) Nagano to Tateyama Kurobe alpine route back to Nagano
29th) Nagano to Kanazawa, takayama and shirakawago and back to Nagano
30th) Nagano to Jigokudani Wild Monkey Park
1st) Nagano and surrounding sight-seeing (e.g Nezame-no-toko Gorge)
2nd) Nagano to hakone
3rd) Fuji five lakes and Fuji-Q highland
4th to 10th) Hakone to Tokyo
10th) Back to Narita International Airport

  • I planned to base myself in Nagano as I visit the Japanese Alps, Kanazawa and Shirakawago. However, I am not very sure if Nagano is the best place to base myself in for visiting these places, so I really do need some advise here.

  • Lastly I would want to enquire what type of JR pass should I purchase for the itinerary.

Sorry for this long email. Your help is much appreciated.

Thank you!

Hello Jayly625,

You've made a great selection of places to visit within the Japanese Alps.

I would recommend looking at travel times between different places within the Japanese Alps, distances on a map can look close but there are not always direct routes available because there are mountains in the way. For instance visiting Kanazawa, Takayama and Shirakawago and then returning to Nagano is simply impossible. It would be better to limited yourself to one place per day.

It may be better to travel and stay the night in different places if you wish to see different parts of the alps, there's not really one place that connects everything in the Japanese alps.

As for the JR Pass, it could certainly be helpful. However I can't say for sure without knowing your exact route.

Hope this helps,
Daniel
